Clarence Cunningham Obituary

In Loving Memory of Clarence Cunningham

His Story

November 27, 1955 – April 22, 2025

Clarence Cunningham “Mutt” was born on November 27, 1955, in Gobler, Missouri, to George and Alice Cunningham. A vibrant and driven individual from an early age, Clarence began his education at Gobler Elementary School before moving to Caruthersville, Missouri, at the age of eight. It was there that his passion for athletics blossomed. Throughout junior high and high school, Clarence excelled in football, basketball, baseball, track, and was proudly believed to be the first African American to play golf at Caruthersville High School. His talent and dedication earned him a place in the “C” Club, founded by longtime friend Erick Hubbard, which celebrated the accomplishments of Black student-athletes.

Following his high school graduation, Clarence enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served with distinction in an amphibious unit during the final years of the Vietnam War. Upon completing his military service, Clarence pursued higher education at the University of Central Arkansas, majoring in Physical Education. He continued his academic and athletic journey at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, where he played on the Division II baseball team.

Clarence was more than an athlete—he was a passionate mentor and community advocate. Recognizing the need for positive role models and youth engagement, he founded a little league football team, guiding and coaching boys aged 8 to 14, including his own sons, for over eight years while residing in Memphis Tennessee. His commitment to uplifting others extended further with the founding of the Caruthersville High School Black Alumni Association. For over two decades, Clarence organized bi-annual reunions that included school supply drives, talent showcases, and live entertainment, often performing his own comedic skits. His efforts celebrated academic success, community involvement, and athletic excellence, leaving a lasting impact on generations.

Clarence’s journey took him to Oklahoma City, Memphis, and Atlanta, before retiring in Jackson, Tennessee, to be closer to his family. He was a loving husband, proud father, doting grandfather, and cherished brother and friend.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, George and Alice Cunningham, his sister Naomi Cunningham, and his son, Clarence Cunningham Jr.

Clarence leaves behind his devoted wife, Nellie Cunningham; children, Cashona Rinehart, Theodis (Jameka) Cunningham, Ricky Cunningham, and Joseph Cunningham; and grandchildren, Reginald McCray Jr., Jamesha (Courtney) Carter, Austin Rinehart, Reese White, Theodis Cunningham Jr., Ryan Rinehart, Raneese White, Joseph Cunningham Jr., Jazmyn Cunningham, Ciara Simmons, Tylin Cunningham, Rylie White, and Channse Hill.

He is also survived by his brother, George Jr. (Jeanine) Cunningham; sisters, Minnie Mitchell, Debra Reeves, and May Frances Johnson; uncle, Theodis (Pat) Thompson; niece, Tywana Cunningham-Anderson; nephew, George Cooley (Nakisa) Cunningham III; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.

Clarence Cunningham’s legacy of service, leadership, and love will live on in all who had the honor of knowing him.

Burial will take place Monday, 05 May 2025 at 1:00PM in Bloomfield Veterans Cemetery located in Bloomfield, MO
