Pinky Lee Dowell was born April 3, 1934 in Caruthersville, MO to the late Miss Katie Robinson and Mr. Joe Brown. On Friday April 15, 2016 Pinky heard the voice of Jesus say come unto me and rest; so she answered her master’s call and went home to be with the Lord. Pinky was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1952. She was also the corresponding secretary of her class, she was a star basketball player for the Central High School girls’ basketball team. Pinky moved to Chicago, IL where she attended cosmetology school and became a licensed beautician. She then worked for General Motors, ran her own store with her partner Shirley Lindsey, and catered wedding receptions and parties.
After she retired from General Motors she moved from Chicago back to Hayti to be close to her mother whom she cared for. Pinky ran her own shop here in Hayti for many years known to all as Pinky’s Beauty Box Salon before she retired for the second time. Pinky joined the ST Paul M.B. Church where she was a choir member before joining the usher’s board where she served faithfully until her death. Pinky was a trustee, Sunday school teacher, and her name is part of the church cornerstone. She loved to cook, always had cakes cooling on the counters and she loved to feed her seniors, she loved to travel she; was a jewel.
Pinky was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents Katie Robinson and Joe Brown, three brothers James D. White Sr., Al Davis Mosley Sr., Arthur Charles Ketchum and her daughter, Mrs. Loretta Collins. She leaves cherished memories to her loving and devoted son Dr. Kennard Brown (Cynthia) of Memphis, TN, a son-in-law Raymond Collins of Chicago, IL, Four grandchildren Gloria Harston Moore, Kennard Brown Jr., Devin Brown and Brittney Collins, two very dear friends and companions Juanita Henry and Dorothy Grayse and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
