Samuel Thomas Benford, was born September 8, 1935 in Braggadocio, MO. He was one of eight children born to James Angus Benford and Beatrice Benford. He departed this life Tuesday, September 30, 2014.
Samuel confessed faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized at First Baptist Church. He later became a faithful member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend H.L. Taylor. Samuel was united in holy matrimony to Annie Williams and to this union four children were born.
He graduated from old Central High School and was employed at the Box Factory for several years. Later, he worked at the Caruthersville Shipyard where he retired in 1979. Everyone knew Samuel as “Pike”. He loved the outdoors, cooking, shooting pool, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, James and Beatrice Benford; three sisters: Alice Lorine Daniels, Myrtle B. Ross, and Barbara Willette; and one sister-in-law, Rose Benford.
He leaves to cherish his memory: four children: Kathy (Dennis)Benford Armour of St. Louis, MO, Michael Thomas Benford of Cape Girardeau, MO, Tony Ray Benford of Kansas City, MO, and Vickie Lynne Stone of Hayti, MO; four siblings: Tony Anthony Benford of Chicago, IL, Robert Lee Benford of San Jose, CA, Judy (Fred) Boswell of Milwaukee, WI, and Loretta Higgins of Cleveland, OH; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
