Vernice was born August 30,1952, to Doretha Kuykendoll Humes and David R. Humes, Sr. in Caruthersville, MO. She was the first child of four children: Vernice, David Jr., Anita, Karl.
She confessed a belief in Christ at an early age and was baptized with the Mt. Zion MBC in Hayti Heights, MO. She was a member there throughout her childhood years. She directed the youth choir as a choir member. After moving and settling in Kansas City, MO, she became a member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church. She served there for over 25 years. As her special gift was her speaking voice, she read the announcements for the church each week. It was in Kansas City, MO where she met and married Clifford Jones. To this union, one child was born, Cassie Lauren Jones.
Vernice received her MBA from Southeast Missouri State University and served for many years in the Kansas City school system. There, she was loved and cherished by her co-workers and students. At the time of her retirement, she was a Counselor in the Hickman Mills School District. She served at Lincoln University and rarely missed a Lincoln Homecoming Event. Also, she was a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and served for many years. Vernice was very active in the Hayti Central School Parent Chapter organization. She served in many capacities including Reunion Chairperson, Membership Chairperson, and a member of the Scholarship Committee.
Vernice departed this life on Tuesday, December 14, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, David Sr. and Doretha Humes, and her daughter Cassie Lauren Jones.
Vernice departed this life on Tuesday, December 14, 2021. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband Clifford Jones; one sister, Anita Humes Orr; two brothers, David Humes, Jr. and Karl (Annette) Humes and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
